11-Day China Itinerary (Hamburg → Shanghai → Hangzhou → Qiandao Lake → Huangshan → Beijing)
A middle-aged couple departing from Hamburg, Germany, between October and November, seeking a 9-12 day tour of China. eclectic tastes, avoid spicy food, and are keen photographers. wish to combine natural landscapes with urban scenery, require convenient high-speed rail travel, and have a moderate budget.
Day 1 — Arrival in Shanghai (PVG, Flight HO1608 via Helsinki) With a stopover in Helsinki, the long-haul flight takes 8.5 hours, reducing journey time by 3-4 hours compared to similar routes. Flights operate on Mon/ Wed/Fri/ Sat. This represents the optimal choice for travel from Northern Europe to Shanghai and is highly recommended.
Arrival: Early morning at Pudong International Airport (PVG).
Transport to city:
1. DiDi China ride-hailing app (about 40–60 min to central ; ~€20 in off-peak).
2. Metro Line 2 first train departs 06:00.
3. Maglev train: 8 minutes to Longyang Road, then transfer to Metro Line 2.
Hotel recommendations (well-located economy chains, close to metro & restaurant, suitable for early check-in requests):
Ji Hotel (Jing’an Temple) – reliable, clean, near Line 2.
Hanting Premium (North Bund) – good for Bund access and evening walks

Afternoon/evening program:
Relax and adjust jetlag at Starbucks Reserve Roastery (once the world’s largest, 3,000 m²).
Sunset at North Bund Riverside (Baiyulan Plaza) – wide skyline views, best golden-hour skyline.
Night photography (after 21:30) at The Bund (外滩) – long-exposure tripod shots of Pudong’s lights reflecting in the Huangpu River. Filters (CPL, ND grad) useful.
Local tip: Shanghai Metro is extensive and easy. You can use a rechargeable metro card, or simply scan with NFC (Alipay/WeChat Pay/Apple Pay).
Day 2 — Full Day in Shanghai
Morning: Stroll the Former French Concession (Wukang Road, plane trees, historic villas, coffee shops). Excellent for street photography.
Afternoon options:
Tianzifang (alleyways, artisan shops, creative studios).
Shanghai Tower 118F observation deck for Shanghai Greenhouse Garden.
Dining (non-spicy local flavors):
Zhejiang/Huaiyang cuisine restaurants – slightly sweet and savory, suitable for European palates.
Day 3 — Shanghai → Hangzhou (Fuxing High-Speed Train, 45 min)
Train: Depart from Shanghai Hongqiao → Hangzhou East. G-series trains every ~30 min, fastest trip ~45 min.
Accommodation (near West Lake, Huanglong, or Qingzhiwu Featured Block – convenient for temple/tea fields):
Ji Hotel (Huanglong Sports Center)
Hanting Premium (Qingzhiwu) – cozy, near cycling routes.
Local inns near Qingzhuwu (often include bicycle rental).
Afternoon: Visit Maojiabu Wetlands (茅家埠) – reeds, water reflections, migratory birds (seasonal). Great for photography.
Dinner: Homestyle Farmhouse Restaurant in Qingzhiwu Block
Day 4 — Hangzhou (Lingyin Temple & Longjing Tea Fields)
Morning: Arrive early at Lingyin Temple 灵隐寺 (07:00 opening). Quiet atmosphere, soft light, perfect for photography.
Late morning: Cycle or taxi to Longjing Tea Village 龙井茶区. Walk through tea terraces.
Lunch: Longjing Green Tea Restaurant 83 Longjing Rd, Xihu, hangzhou. This is the flagship restaurant of the chain that comes most highly recommended. If you like it, you may wish to try other branches.
Afternoon: Sunset along West Lake’s White Causeway or Broken Bridge – soft golden reflections.
Evening: Strolling along Nanshan Road, or enjoying the West Lake Scenic Area Music Fountain (19:30 beginning)
Day 5 — Hangzhou → Qiandao Lake (Fuxing HSR, 50–90 min)
Train: Hangzhou East → Qiandaohu Station. Shuttle bus/taxi to lakeside hotels.
Hotel recommendations (lake view resorts, offer safe dining):

Activities: Afternoon boat cruise; evening/sunrise photography of lake and islands.

Day 6 — Qiandao Lake → Huangshan (HSR, 40–70 min)
Train: Qiandaohu → Huangshan North (direct or via transfer, usually 1 hr).
Transfer: Shuttle bus or taxi (1 hr) to Tunxi (city) or Tangkou (mountain base).
Hotel options:
City (Tunxi): Crowne Plaza Huangshan Yucheng / Huangshan International Hotel (comfortable, good dinner options).
Mountain-top: Beihai Hotel / Baiyun Hotel – basic but best for sunrise access (must pre-book).
Evening: If staying in Tunxi, explore Tunxi Old Street – traditional Anhui architecture, night street scenes.
Day 7 — Huangshan (Yellow Mountain Hiking & Photography)
Morning: Take Yungu or Yuping Cable Car up.
Suggested hiking loop: Welcome Pine → Bright Summit → Flying Rock → West Sea Grand Canyon.
Photography highlights:
Sunrise: Bright Summit (光明顶) or Lion Peak (狮子峰).
Cloud Sea & Pines: West Sea Canyon.
Famous scenes: Guest-Greeting Pine, Flying Rock, “Brush Pen Peak”.
Tip: Stay on mountain overnight if possible – saves energy and ensures sunrise access.
Day 8 — Huangshan → Beijing (Fuxing HSR, 6 hrs)
Train: Huangshan North → Beijing North (direct G-series). Choose earliest/fastest.
Hotel recommendations (clean, near metro, ~€40):
Ji Hotel Beijing Dongzhimen – convenient for airport express.
QUAN JI LE JIA HOTEL New facilities, convenient transport links, away from the bustle of the city centre.
JHW Hotel Close to the National Stadium, with excellent greenery
Jinjiang Inn Beijing Xizhimen – quieter, still central.
Afternoon: Climb Jingshan Park for the classic aerial shot of Forbidden City’s central axis. Optional visit to Beihai Park nearby.
Transport: Metro Line 1 or 2 to Tian’anmen/Wangfujing.
Day 9 — The Great Wall (Less Crowded Sections)
Recommended section: Jinshanling (金山岭) or Mutianyu (慕田峪) – fewer tourists, better photography.
Transport:

Depart early morning (weekday preferred).
Tip: Wear hiking shoes, bring water. Jinshanling has steeper climbs but dramatic ridge views.
Day 10 — Forbidden City & City Photography
Tickets for foreigners:
Book on the official Palace Museum site
Register with passport; bring passport on entry. Booking opens 7 days in advance.
Visit: Enter at 08:30 opening → Hall of Supreme Harmony → Inner Courts.
Afternoon: National Museum of China https://pcticket.chnmuseum.cn/museum-en/ Bookings must be made via the website at least seven days in advance. .
Day 11 — Departure from Beijing
Yuan ming yuan park ( Old Summer Palace)(7:00 opening)Subway Line 4
Than visit the nearby Summer Palace.
Lunch: Longhu Beijing Yihe Xingyuehui. The Food Court, situated between the Summer Palace and the (Yuanmingyuan) , offers over a dozen dining options including Green Tea Restaurant, Pizza Hut, and Da Dong Roast Duck.
Afternoon: Departing from Beijing Capital International Airport to Thailand

Always choose G-series Fuxing trains for fastest, most comfortable high-speed travel.
Request early check-in when booking hotels (often possible at Ji Hotel/Hanting Premium).
Carry tripod + wide & telephoto lenses for landscapes.
Meals: Focus on mild Zhejiang, Huaiyang, and Yunnan restaurants; supplement with international chains (Pizza Hut, Starbucks, McDonald’s) only on 2–3 travel days when convenient.

Essential for payments. You can pay almost everywhere by QR code.
